While tightly rendering sketches for an up-coming book, I’ve been playing around loosely with an assortment of art supplies. (Ink, pencils, charcoal) 

Starting a new painting

Starting a new painting today. This one has been on my mind for a while. It’s of my nephew a long time ago at the traditional 4th of July picnic. I’m using a 9x12 canvas on board, and have roughly sketched in the composition in a wash of burnt sienna. 

Takin a Ride

Here is a new small 5x7 oil of a happy dog out for a ride with his owner.

Plein Air Painting

I'm setting out on a new venture, "Plein Air" painting.
This week a new pochade box arrived and it is now mounted on a carbon light weight heavy duty tripod.

Old Town Dock Finished!

Finally, I was able to finish the Old Town Dock painting.  The color of the flag added the needed focus and interest.

She was a lot of fun to do.  I fell in love with her expression.  Hope you like it too.

This is a piece that is in the works now, 18x24 in Oil.
It's from a picture I took in Old Town Alexandria at the dock. I have a good bit of work to do on it yet, and am thinking it needs something to add some life, perhaps a person or animal somewhere. Any thoughts?

"Dad's Golf"

This is one of my first watercolors.  I am taking a class at the Smithsonian with artist David Daniels http://www.mrwatercolor.com/   His style is different than mine, but I am learning his views.  I like to watch the instructions on You Tube and find they are more helpfull than anything else.  Cheep Joes also has a lot of great tips, and instructions, not to mention good prices on materials.  My paint is mostly Danial Smiths http://danielsmithblog.com/.  This is a new medium for me and I find that I have to sort of think backwards from oil painting.  In oil the picture can develop and change, even morph as I go along.  With watercolor the end result must be clear before the brush hits the paper with everything planed out.
